Southern California Edison is seeking a summer intern to work in the Customer Technology Application Center (CTAC) in Irwindale. Edison CTAC is a customer training and exhibit demonstration facility assisting commercial and industrial customers with their energy needs.

An internal graphic design and multimedia team provides all the print media, training manuals, exhibit design, and interactive Flash programming for touch screen applications. Edison CTAC is seeking a competent graphic designer to fill a summer intern position that has potential for part time work during the fall semester as well.

Position requires strong working knowledge of:
InDesign
Illustrator
Photoshop
Flash

Candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge of skills through portfolio review and on-site demonstration. This internship program is a paid position. To be discussed.

Scope of work includes: advanced page layout and typographic skills, understanding of electronic pre-press, logos design, brochures, posters, large scale graphics, Flash skills including action script, and developing navigation systems.

General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel
Good writing skills, grammar, and proofing abilities.

Gary Flake: is Pivot a turning point for web exploration?

From TED: "Gary Flake demos Pivot, a new way to browse and arrange massive amounts of images and data online. Built on breakthrough Seadragon technology, it enables spectacular zooms in and out of web databases, and the discovery of patterns and links invisible in standard web browsing."

Pivot is still an experiment, not a finished product. It isn't available for Mac or Linux yet, and not even to Windows xp users.

visit http://memo.hardrock.com to view a Pivot collection inside of Silverlight. The interface is different than Pivot's, but there's nothing stopping anyone from porting the controls over to a Silverlight app.

This demo also shows how important that is to make your data computer readable , i.e. semantically tagged.

A picture is worth a thousand words. New work from photographer Chris Jordan .
Chris Jordan is best known for larger scale photography that depicts mass consumption and waste.
You might see his work in our main gallery. Last December, he was one of the artists in "Waht's the rush? Topics on Convenience" exhibition. One of his works was a large scale digital print depicting two million plastic beverage bottles.

Abandoned his "pop art approach", Chris Jordan's new work was less about form but more intense and shocking. Work was shot in 2009, on Midway Atoll, a tiny island near the middle of the North Pacific. In order to documented the phenomenon as faithfully as possible, Chris did not make any artificial rearrangement: "not a single piece of plastic in any of these photographs was moved, placed, manipulated, arranged, or altered in any way. These images depict the actual stomach contents of baby birds in one of the world's most remote marine sanctuaries, more than 2000 miles from the nearest continent." Chris Jordan's also been called the "it" artist for the green movement. "It chages the way you view the world."

I couldn't stop laughing when I saw Jenifer Tidwell's comment on the cover design for her book: Designing Interfaces: Patterns for Effective Interaction Design.
"Why a duck? I have no idea. O'Reilly's people picked it, not me, but I think it has something to do with the fact that Mandarin ducks are colorful, and the book was printed in full color. Also, some of their other Web books have birds on their covers. (But he's cute, isn't he?)"

This is the case you can't judge a book by its cover. A fantastic intermediate-level book about interface and interaction design, structured as a pattern language. Check it's web site for more information.

The world is moving to HTML5?

Will HTML 5 be the the death knell for rich Internet application (RIA) technologies like Adobe's Flash?

After a big public announcement of iPad CEO Steve Jobs spoke to his employee about his frustration with buggy Flash, lazy Adobe and Google’s fakery in the “don’t be evil” department.

Here’s a couple of Steve’s quotes from the meeting: “Adobe is lazy. Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash. The world is moving to HTML5.”

Although these words have not been (and will never be) officially confirmed, multiple anonymous people from the audience confirmed their authenticity to Wired.

Yesterday The NewYork Times also had an article about this by NICK BILTON: Ipad can't play video, but it may not matter. –––"Flash is one of the world’s most ubiquitous applications, appearing on 98 percent of all computers. YouTube videos run on it. It is what animates millions of graphics and advertisements on Web sites around the world. Adobe says the technology supports nearly 75 percent of video on the Web and 70 percent of online gaming sites. But Apple’s support for Flash has been flagging. While Flash is present on nearly every Apple desktop and laptop computer, the company decided that Flash would not be used on the iPhone. Apple has argued that the Flash technology is too slow and unduly taxes laptops and netbooks. The company also has concerns over Flash’s vulnerability to viruses and other malware, as well as the way Flash-based content can voraciously consume battery life."

I received an email from Ryan Porter on behalf of Paramount Pictures to present a unique photography competition to our students.
"I'm contacting you on behalf of Paramount Pictures to present a unique photography competition to your students. The project is based on The Lovely Bones, a major motion picture we're releasing on December 11. Adapted from the best-selling book of the same name, it's a 'story of life and everything that came after;' a stunning tale of a young girl who watches over her family from heaven. Shot by visionary director Peter Jackson, the film looks to be an aesthetic masterpiece.

Photography is a major element in the film. The young girl/main character, Susie Salmon, captures as many memories as she can through her pictures, which is what gave us the idea for the competition.

It's a simple and fun challenge- "How will college remember you?." To participate, a student submits 4-5 standard-size photos that personify his or her college experience. They can be presented as a collection, sequence, or story- whatever captures the essence of their time at Cal State Fullerton. The participants have complete creative control, and what makes it an amazing event is that it promotes photography with the spirit of college.

We'd love for CSF's photography department to participate in our college competition. Entries from CSF will compete only with other Orange County universities. With your approval, I'll swing by your department with a few flyers and a submission box (I've attached a sample flier for your enjoyment). At the end of the competition I'll pick up the box winners will be awarded free movie tickets and prize packages. The photos will be returned to your department where they would make an excellent collection to display."

Redesign Craigslist (3): What’s Wrong With Craigslist?

The weaknesses of Craigslist, accounting to Smashing magazine:

1. The Design is Bland and Outdated
As mentioned earlier, and as any Craigslist visitor already knows, the design of the website lacks visual appeal.

2. Logging In, Signing Up, and Managing an Account is More Difficult than Necessary
Craigslist has achieved its success due to the huge community of users it has managed to build. According to its fact sheet, each month over 30 million new classifieds are posted to the website, and over 12 billion pages are viewed. With this kind of activity level, it’s clear that making the process of creating an account, logging in and managing the account should be as straightforward as possible. However, the current website could be improved in these areas. Unnecessary clicks are needed to do anything with an account, and options on the account page are very limited.

3. Screen Space Is Not Prioritized
One issue with the current design of the Craigslist home page, as well as sub-pages, is the use of screen space. Valuable screen space could be used more effectively in some areas to improve the usability of the website.

4. Navigation
Craigslist is really a network of smaller websites held on sub-domains of Craigslist.org. Each sub-domain, representing an actual location, has its own board of classifieds. Currently, over 550 cities in 50 different countries are represented. With any website of this size and this amount of content, challenges with the navigation will always exist. Some aspects of navigation are rather effective on Craigslist, but others leave room for improvement.

For starters, there is no navigation menu that appears consistently throughout the website. Some pages use a left sidebar, some don’t. Some pages are easily accessible from most areas of the website, but not all. On many of the secondary pages, huge amounts of screen space are left completely empty with very few navigational options. This forces users to hit the “Back” button in their browser to go to another section of the website, something that could be improved by adding more navigational choices on these pages.

The cover story for the September 2009 issue of Wired takes a look at the current state of Craigslist and the challenges it faces as it continues to evolve. In a sidebar, the magazine’s art director Scott Dadich invited several top web designers to re-imagine and redesign Craigslist itself.

The designers' list include:

Thomas' minimalist take (below) makes a pro-status quo argument, recognizing that the site functions perfectly well in its current form with only minor, mostly aesthetic tweaks.

Studio8 Design came up with a more dramatically different-looking version, prioritizing the all-important photos to make rapid-fire browsing instantly gratifying.

Lisa Strausfeld of Pentagram
While the others go to great lengths to keep the practical side at the forefront, Pentagram seems to all but dispense with the concern, playfully transforming the homepage's text links into an image of the man behind the curtain. The search function, however, moved to the bottom of the page, remains otherwise untouched. Maybe they're onto something.

Today, the way people choose to express themselves on the Internet is shifting away from isolated Web pages. Instead they use social-networking sites such as Facebook, with built-in features for creating a profile, staying in touch with contacts, and maintaining at least a little privacy; WordPress, where it's easy to post updates to a blog; or Flickr, where the photographically inclined can meet, share, and comment.

What these services and others including Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, and Blogger possess is a mechanism to notify interested parties of new activity, helping to keep social links pulsing with new information in a way that just can't be replicated by depending on a person to swing by a personal Web site.

That's not to say personal home pages are extinct. Google Sites is still around, and Yola, formerly SynthaSite, bought out search ads related to GeoCities searches on Thursday. But for most folks, it's easier to rely on more sophisticated pre-built services than to roll their own sites.

People basically hate all advertising. But they also know and accept that it's the cost of free content.
Advertising on TV, radio and print has always been interruptive and distracting.
We are guilty of perpetrating a few of these units on our readers (sorry!).
Which is why our goal here is to help publishers 1) choose the lesser of several evils 2) at least know what they're inflicting on their users, so that it's a choice, not an accident.

Appearing below are a number of questions and answers about the transition to the new visual identity that may be helpful.

Why is CSUF’s visual identity changing?
In his email to campus, Dr. Gordon outlined the process that led to the identity change. Among the planning efforts currently under way on campus has been a yearlong effort to better understand the university’s aspirational position in the higher education marketplace. Because an organization’s visual identity is a creative tool that supports aspirational positioning, we assessed our current logo and seal as part of this effort. After concepts were tested with multiple constituencies both on and off campus, the president and his senior leadership team approved the new identity based on this cumulative feedback.

What does the new imagery in the seal, logo, and emblem mean?
The tree stands as a symbol of academic and personal growth, knowledge, and transformation. The fact that it is an orange tree recalls our past as a campus that grew from among the orange groves, and also reflects our home here in Orange County. The mountain imagery, inspired by the ranges to the north and east, helps to further define our place in the world, while also representing strength and permanence. The sunrays convey a sense of vision, optimism, and confidence in the future. We believe these images together help communicate the qualities and values the university promotes.

Do I need to order new letterhead and business cards?
At the end of May, the university is changing its area code to 657. In order to avoid confusion, you will most likely want to order letterhead and business cards that reflect this change, while also reviewing the inventory you have on hand and appropriate cost considerations.

How do I order letterhead, envelopes, and business cards?
Stationery can be ordered online. The website for Reprographics here on campus (http://edigital.fullerton.edu/dsf) will be updated in the coming days to reflect the new identity. Reprographics is the only authorized vendor for stationery orders.

How do I download the new logo?
By June 1, new artwork will be available for download on the Strategic Communications website. An announcement will be made when visual identity artwork is available.

I have a project that needs to be printed/produced prior to June 1. What do I do?
If you require identity artwork for an urgent job prior to the general rollout, please contact Andrea Davis, coordinator of client and production services in Strategic Communications, at adavis@fullerton.edu.

Is the university abandoning use of the elephant image?
No. The “Titan” elephant image will live on as part of the visual representations of our athletics program. Strategic Communications and Athletics will soon develop a refreshed elephant icon for this purpose, which will join other athletics-related images such as the Fullerton “F” and “Titans” wordmark. In addition, the illustrated “Tuffy” design, which is an informal caricature of the university mascot, will continue to be used.

What “rules” govern the use of the components of the visual identity system?
At the same time that artwork downloads become available, new graphic standards also will be posted. In short, no component of the visual identity system may be manipulated from its established form. Additionally, Athletics’ yet-to-be-created Titan image and the official “Tuffy” illustration produced by Strategic Communications are the only two elephant images permitted for use at Cal State Fullerton.

Did the university spend money on developing the identity package?
In keeping with these challenging budgetary times, we developed the new visual identity without incurring external consulting or design costs. Operational funds spent by Strategic Communications have been negligible. In addition, we've elected to make the university's transition to the new identity a gradual process to minimize costs.
